DearĀ Collin,

The past five years and 9.8 months have gone very quickly.

Today is your first step into daily discovery by means of public education. Your entire family is excited to travel with you on this journey, as we’ve all been astounded already by your brilliance.

We’ve always held conversations with you as if you were much older, and it sometimes catches us off guard when we realize that you’re still five. We’ve sat together for good periods of time and discussed the world around us – from the nervous system, to the order and the names of the satellites of our eight planets. We’ve covered the spectrum of colors hidden inside light, the unwavering single direction of the fourth dimension, and even some relativity.

I’ll always remember discussing Archimedes when your body displaces your bath water. I’ll always remember discussing Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Einstein and how they discovered laws of the universe by simply solving their own questions about the very matter surrounding them. A little bit of scientific method with a dash of imagination.

We all know that much of what we talk about will not sink in for a few years yet, but we’re often amazed at how well you comprehend what we expected you wouldn’t. You know more about the body and solar system than many adults.

Personally, I’m excited to see you reach this milestone because you’ll begin learning more about what we’ve all taught you so far. You will likely be a bit beyond the topics in your standard grade-zero class. You’re already reading very well and that’s not even introduced until next year.

I hope you enjoy the journey of learning more about the universe around you. I’m eager to answer your remaining questions as best as I can – about science, math, technology, history, politics, philosophy, and everything else.

Almost everyone I work with is seeing their children off to middle or high school, which is still a few years away. However, I’m sure it will be here soon enough. By the time your sister reaches this milestone you will be approaching your tenth birthday!

Good luck on your first day. Just remember, learning never stops.

Love, Daddy
